Six things to know before starting a solar project
We asked a few team members from across departments to share their most common observations—those small but significant things that are often top of mind, even before the first panel is installed.
1. It’s more than just construction
Rick Garrett, Project Coordinator for Construction, points out something we see often: the visible portion of a solar project—construction—is just the tip of the iceberg.
“Building a solar system is easy! It’s the rest of it that’s hard… Construction is only a small part of the entire project. It takes a whole lot of effort and energy to get to the end.”
This is a helpful reminder that planning, permitting, interconnection, stakeholder alignment, and project modeling are just as critical to a successful outcome.
2. Consider O&M up front
According to Kristin Darocha, Senior Services Manager of Asset Management, long-term operational success is shaped by early decisions in design and development.
“We often see things like rooftop access points or ventilation ducts that weren’t fully considered. These can affect both maintenance access and system performance over time.”
Another common factor? Vegetation. Ground mount projects may require specific mowing schedules or environmental care, particularly when using native grasses or managing invasive species. These considerations can impact costs, schedules, and long-term sustainability.
3. Project goals guide project design
Brandon Abasolo, Senior Director of the Proposal Team, encourages teams to think about goals early.
“What’s your ultimate goal for pursuing solar? Is it cost savings, sustainability, revenue? That objective should shape everything from the design to the contract structure.”
Aligning the project with your broader organizational objectives helps streamline decision-making throughout development.
4. Start with the right information
From existing drawings and grid infrastructure, to meter sequencing and utility requirements, the more engineering information available early on, the better. Project Engineer Jack Keane highlights the value of utility pre-applications and detailed engineering site visits to de-risk interconnection.
“Utility pre-applications provide direct insights into grid limitations and potential upgrades for a modest price and short turnaround. Paired with a detailed engineering site visit of the interconnection method, EPC’s can avoid change orders and construction delays later.”
5. Weather, trees & timing: External factors to watch
Brad Allen, Director of Development Engineer, reminds us that nature plays a role too.
“Weather data and tree growth are modeled using averages, but they can still shift over time. It’s good to be flexible and build that adaptability into your planning.”
He also notes that while creative design solutions can go a long way, every site has its limitations—and understanding those helps get the best result.
6. Clarity of intent goes a long way
Finally, Steve Wood, Senior Manager of Commercial Sales shares that clarity around objectives helps developers and partners deliver better results.
““Are you prioritizing maximum solar output or lowest cost? Do you want to retain RECs or not? Are there site limitations or aesthetic preferences? These are all helpful to clarify from the start.”
Each solar project is different, but thoughtful preparation makes all the difference. Whether it’s evaluating maintenance access, reviewing electrical gear locations, or considering the look and feel of a site post-installation, early collaboration helps build projects that perform well for years to come.
