DSD’s Bishop Ranch Project Receives Top Project of the Year Award from Environment + Energy Leader

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — April 22, 2024 — DSD Renewables’ (DSD) 23.9MW solar and storage portfolio for Bishop Ranch, a 600-acre mixed-use campus in San Ramon, California, has been named a Top Project of the Year winner in the 2024 Environment + Energy Leader Awards. The Environment + Energy Leader Awards program celebrates the exceptional advancements made in environmental, sustainability, and energy management.

The Bishop Ranch portfolio, completed in partnership with Sunset Development Company, is the world’s largest multi-campus solar and energy storage installation, with a total of 16.78MW of solar and 7.11 MW of storage capacity. Once the portfolio is fully completed in 2025, all 16 individual installations will together produce approximately 24.31 GWh annually, meeting between 75% and 90% of Bishop Ranch’s energy needs with renewables.

“This portfolio sets a new standard for what is possible with onsite solar and storage for commercial campuses, and we’re happy to be considered a leader at the forefront of this movement,” says Alexander Mehran, Jr., President and CEO of Sunset Development Company. “Thanks to the help of our partners at DSD, we’re honored to have our accomplishments at Bishop Ranch be recognized, and we’re proud of the immense value this portfolio will bring to our community.”

Following DSD’s initial project for Bishop Ranch City Center in 2018 – a 1.32 MW rooftop canopy – the remainder of the portfolio’s deployment was divided into three consecutive phases. The first phase, completed in 2021 and consisting of 1.28 MW of solar and 1.33 MWh of storage, is already generating 1.9 GWh of clean energy per year. The second phase, which included 9 projects, was mechanically complete in April 2024 and features 9.74 MW of solar and 9.65 MWh of energy storage capacity. The second phase is expected to generate a total of 14.86 GWh of energy annually. Phase three, expected to break ground in Q3 of this year, will add four installations consisting of 4.44 MW of solar and 3.22 MWh of storage capacity.

With DSD’s in-house design team working closely with Sunset Development Co., the Bishop Ranch projects were innovatively integrated into existing infrastructure and office buildings, featuring a mix of rooftop, canopy, and ground mount installations, optimizing energy production and savings while seamlessly blending into the campus’ aesthetic. The teams also worked diligently to ensure that no disruption was caused to the campus’ tenants and businesses.

“Our work at Bishop Ranch represents the heart of what we do here at DSD,” says Ben Jones, EVP of Product Innovation at DSD. “Our in-house expertise and commitment to delivering value have allowed us to develop a remarkable portfolio, uniquely integrating solar and storage in a way that is both architecturally stunning and provides vast benefits to this mixed-use campus.

“Earning the E+E Leader Top Project Award is a real testament to our continued mission to accelerate clean energy adoption nationwide, one project at a time.”

DSD previously received Environment + Energy Leader’s Top Project of the Year Award in 2022 for its 1.2 MW solar and 500 kW storage installation for Mauna Loa, and again in 2023 for its 5.67 MW solar portfolio with San Bernardino City Unified School District.
